Geeking 4 Everyone's Top Ten picks of the week (8-21-2013)

There are so many great new titles that come out every week that it makes it so tough to choose.  But each week we will be choosing 10 titles that are our top picks, and we will also be giving a short description of the comic.  Our intent is not to reveal anything but a summary of what the book may be about, but if you don't want to know anything then don't read any further.  Our weekly reviews will be more designed to actually discuss the book with more spoilers, the purpose in these weekly blogs is to recommend books to our fans, and let you know what is on our list for the week.  We love to hear all input from our fans so please don't hesitate to let us know how you like any of the books recommended, or if you have any questions.  The picks are always done alphabetically so these picks are not numbered from first choice to last choice only the top 10 that we choose to purchase for the week.  We always choose writers and artists that we believe are extremely talented so no need to state the obvious on that one.  Although, now and again we may give a mention to one of our favorites.  We also like to pick one kids book for the parents out there looking for good books for their little ones.

Avengers #18:  It has been a while since we have picked up any Avengers issues.  And so this week we wanted to pick one up to add to our collection.
This takes place in space and The Avengers declare war on their intruders, and the Skrull Empire is reborn.  The Avengers also have their first meeting with the builders.  Will the Avengers defeat the invaders?  What else will be revealed in this weeks issue?   If you like the Avengers, then I recommend picking up this book.

Batman Beyond Universe #1:  This is a brand new series that starts this week and we are thoroughly excited to add this series to our collection.  If we had to only pick one book from this week then this would be the book we would pick.  We are very pumped for this new series with many exciting characters.  Not only does this new series have an exciting plot with Batman, but also with the Justice League.  Sometimes the books with multiple characters are great, because there are so many exciting ways the story can lead.  And also, having multiple exciting things going on in one book rather than just focusing on one character.  In this series, Terri Mcginneys college career is threatened at Gotham University and his role as Batman could get even more complicated when the Mayor is murdered.  And even more chaos is caused when Superman's powers get out of control and the Justice League must come in to save the day  Will Batman be able to help Gotham?  Will the Justice League be able to save the day before any more damage is caused?  Be sure to pick up this book and let us know what you think of this exciting new series!!!

Bloodshot #0:  We have always thoroughly enjoyed Valiant comics, their writers and artists are amazing and I have never once been disappointed.  This series is based in Afghanistan and its described as memories that may be real or they could be something that was dreamed.  The question for this series that will be an interesting discovery, is what is Bloodshot?  Is this one man?  Is it a whole Organization?  Is it just a few men?  Is bloodshot good or evil?  All we know is we can't wait to pick up the first book to this series to find out all the details to this action packed comic.  This series sounds so intriguing and I cannot wait to get started on it.  Matt Kindt has always been a favorite of mine, with the Mind Mgmt series and many others.   We have a feeling this may be one of those series where it is going to be hard to buy the first one and stop there.

Justice League Dark #23:  This is a series that we have not had the chance to pick up in a while, but I wanted to be sure to add this to my list this week.  We would like to start off by saying that the art in this series is absolutely amazing.  As you can see from the cover, the art alone is enough for me to want to continue to add this series to my collection.  We have always been huge fans of Johnathan Hickman and his work continues to amaze us each time we pick up one of his books.  In this weeks issue, a heros murderer is solved.   Will the Justice League seek revenge?   What other exciting things will happen in this weeks issue?

Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin #5:  When this series came out we were very curious about it and of course its Star Wars so I had to check it out.  As a collector, I also like getting the smaller series so we can complete a series without breaking the bank.  We have the first four, so this will top off our collection.  In this issue The assassin has been stalking Darth and its finally time for them to fight, and Darth is also distracted with problems at the empire. Who will win this battle?  Will Darth be too distracted with the empire to be prepared for the assassin?  Or will the Assassin be able to overcome one of the Darkest villains in the space?

Superior Spiderman #16:  This is one Spiderman series that we have not had the chance to check out yet.  In this weeks book the Hobgoblin is back, and it sounds like its going to be a battle between Spiderman and the Hobgoblin.  Will Spiderman be strong enough to beat the Hobgoblin?  What will be in the future for Spiderman after facing the Hobgoblin?  Read this weeks issue for more exciting details leading into this story.  If you love Spiderman this is the series to pick up right now.

Superman Unchained #3:  We have not missed a book in this series yet, and looking forward to adding another book to our Superman Unchained collection.  In this book Superman has figured out that the United States Army kept a huge secret from him.  And Lois Lane is there to help Superman. How do will Superman react?  What is the secret and how will Superman handle the situation? This series seems to be a popular series and a must want for everyone.  Let us know how you are enjoying this series if you have read it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles New Animated Adventures #2:  When the new Ninja Turtles came out I was not completely wild about the art and how it had changed so much from the Turtles that I loved so much in the 80's.  But, I am giving this series a chance last week Justin and Rowan at Mile High Comics were kind enough to drop off the #1 to this series to a location close to our house.  So this week we want to continue the collection by purchasing the second book.  We also picked up a special SDCC version of this comic last week from Mile High Comics.  In this second book Snakeweed returns and the brothers will have to split up in order to save the day.  Can they do it?

Venom #39:  It has been a while since we have read a Venom book so we decided to pick up this one this week.  In the last issue he could only save one of his students from the Villianous Jack O Lantern.  In this weeks issue Venom's identity is discovered, and who could it be?  Could there be a possible side kick in this issue?  What other problems could Venom run into? Pick up this issue to find out.

Kids pick: Adventure Time #19:  This is our kids pick for the week.  If you want something educational for your little one Adventure time is the way to go.  We don't really have a lot of time to read kids comics, so the only thing we have to go off is what we see that kids love.  One of our kids is just a baby, but the other one is six and has always loved Adventure Time.  The thing I love about Adventure time is it throws an additional education twist, on top of reading and learning all about literacy.  Our six year old of course loves Marvel and all the other comics, but there is not always a Marvel or DC comic every week that is appropriate for his age group, and its great to throw an extra educational comic in there now and again.  One thing I noticed at Free Comic Book Day this year, was that the kids were going crazy over Adventure Time.  This may have been what encouraged our six year old, but regardless the kiddos seem to love it.  If your child struggles with math this weeks issue would be especially beneficial to pick up.  If your kids are older I would recommend the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Series #2 ( discussed earlier in blog), or the My Little Pony Micro Series #7.  These two also seem to be popular with the kiddos.  And parents please don't forget to visit Comic Book Classroom for great resources and programs for your little ones.

These are our top 10 picks for the week let us know if you have any questions, and please feel free to comment with any input.  We love having conversations and answering any questions that fans may have.  Also, sometimes buying everything in one week can be overwhelming, but if you shop at Mile High Comics like we do you will save a ton of money.  And, you may also get something for free as a bonus as we have gotten from several online orders. Until next weeks new releases.....
